Baz Luhrmann and Miuccia Prada on Their 30-Year Friendship—And Their Dazzling Costume Collaboration for Elvis

Hình ảnh
Strangely enough, I don’t feel like trash is important today. I don’t know why, maybe we can understand together? Because it’s really true, you can’t understand the world if you don’t understand trash. But for the past two, three years, I feel that trash doesn’t bring me anything. It's probably because it’s more of a fantasy: a super-high, super-low fantasy, and I’m trying to understand it now exactly and be more realistic. More practical. More useful. I don’t know why, but I think it’s a moment where you can be somehow serious in your work. I feel it’s not the moment for fantasies though—of course, we’ll always have fantasy—but because it’s so difficult to understand what’s happening… the metaverse, NFTs, all that kind of world that is run in parallel. Is it good? Is it wrong? Also cancel culture, all the big, big problems that are around. You have to change the way you think or adapt. Is it wrong? Is it good to talk about politics? Because, for instance, I’ve always refused to t...

3 Things That Kept Me Up After Watching Episode 7 of The Kardashians

Hình ảnh
Questions about Kim’s post-divorce independence have been central to The Kardashians thus far. Can Kim prove herself on live TV as a comedian? How will she style herself without Kanye? Will she really pass the “baby bar” exam and eventually become an attorney? This week, it’s a buzzy deal with Balenciaga and a futuristic Vogue cover that reflect her renewed—and, in fact, elevated—sense of agency. Along the way, we get a glimpse inside her archival closet, which contains everything she’s ever publicly worn. Khloe debuts her sleek new house, and Kris and Kylie embark on an adventure akin to classic Keeping Up episodes in its absurdity: a day of doing “normal things.” Here are three things that kept me up after episode seven of The Kardashians. Kris explains why they seldom shop for themselves these days. “One of the things that gets a little tricky is privacy,” she says. “I stopped going to the grocery store because people in the store were sneaking pictures. It was hard.” The edit ...

Prizes, Protests, and Pajama Parties: The View From Inside This Year’s Cannes Film Festival

Hình ảnh
Two years after the pandemic forced the cancellation of the 2020 edition and following a muted run last summer, the world’s largest celebration of cinema returned to the Côte d’Azur for its 75th anniversary last week, kicking off a 10-day whirlwind of glamour, spectacle, and megawatt stars. The opening night on Tuesday set the tone. During a celebrity-strewn black-tie gala in the Palais des Festival’s Grand Théâtre Lumière, festival president Pierre Lescure bestowed upon the American actor Forest Whitaker an honorary Palme d’Or, the festival’s most prestigious award. In a moving and poignant acceptance speech, Whitaker—who has appeared in more than 30 films, including Good Morning Vietnam and The Last King of Scotland, for which he won the Oscar for best actor—told the audience that the first time he attended Cannes was in 1988 for Clint Eastwood’s film Bird, in which he played legendary jazz saxophonist Charlie “Bird” Parker. Whitaker was “just a kid,” he recalled, and was “blown...

The collection ranges in price from $210 (for socks) to $5,500 (for a hooded leather jacket) and also includes track pants, windbreakers, dresses, T-shirts, beanies and shorts. The chunky Adidas Triple S sneakers that made the rounds on the internet back in March are also part of the collab, retailing for $1,100. The Balenciaga x Adidas Originals collection is currently available on Balenciaga.com. {Fashionista inbox} As the industry anticipates Farfetch's first-quarter earnings report on May 26, Business of Fashion asks whether the company can shift the narrative around fashion tech. "Farfetch is a master at reinventing itself to ride the latest trends in online retail. But it's having a tough time convincing investors it's not just another pandemic stock," writes Brian Baskin. "Like most o...

All About Bobby Wooten III, Katie Holmes' New Boyfriend

Hình ảnh
Katie Holmes and her new boyfriend Bobby Wooten III appeared on the red carpet together on Thursday, May 26. They were attending The Moth’s 25th Anniversary gala, The Silver Ball, held at Spring Studios in New York City. The 43-year-old Dawson's Creek star stepped out with the 33-year-old Grammy nominee, getting affectionate in front of the cameras. Wooten grew up in Chicago, a midwesterner like Holmes, who is native to Toledo. The musician and composer is playing bass in Moulin Rouge! The Musical on Broadway at the moment, but he seems to have projects and performances popping up everywhere. At this year's Coachella, Wooten performed with Carly Rae Jepsen, he was nominated for a Grammy Award, and is also an adjunct instructor at NYU Tisch School of the Arts. A source told People that Wooten is “an amazing guy, very kind, super talented and just an all-around cool guy. He’s a highly accomplished bassist and musician, and is as chill and brilliant and funny as they come.” Woote...

Sally Reed Is ‘Unraveling’ In Barry Season 3. But Sarah Goldberg's In Control.

Hình ảnh
t’s fitting, in the sick tragicomedy of Barry, that Sally Reed’s triumph should look so much like a meltdown. As played by Canadian actress Sarah Goldberg, Sally is sweetly narcissistic, likable for an unlikable type, so self-involved that she never notices her cheerleader boyfriend—Bill Hader’s Barry—is a sociopathic hit-man addicted to his own trigger finger. In the long-anticipated third season, Sally is finally churning her trauma as a domestic abuse survivor into a Hollywood cash cow; she’s producing, writing, and starring in a show named after her hometown of Joplin, Missouri, all about a mother who coaches her young daughter out of a violent relationship. At Joplin’s premiere, Sally learns the show has earned a 98 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Turns out, the critics like the pretty package in which she's boxed her tragedy. Although Barry is a comedy, there’s a reason why so many of its laughs feel more like winces. “This is where [Sally’s] trauma and her art are being m...

How To Help Robb Elementary Shooting Victims And The Uvalde Community

Hình ảnh
Nineteen children and two adults were killed in a shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas on Tuesday. It is the deadliest school shooting in the state’s history, and the second deadliest school shooting in U.S. history. Authorities and hospital officials have said that others were injured, but that number has not yet been confirmed. The 18-year-old shooter, who is believed to have acted alone, was reportedly killed. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who has signed into law many measures to expand gun rights, called the massacre a “horrific tragedy that cannot be tolerated.” During a press conference, Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Hal Harrell held back tears while asking for “prayers to get through this.” Members of the community are also in need of things like blood, legal volunteers, and monetary relief. Two Uvalde funeral homes, Hillcrest Memorial Funeral Home and Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary, have already said o...

On TV, South Asian Women Are Choosing Their Own Happiness

Hình ảnh
For me, a South Asian viewer—and, I imagine, so many other South Asian women watching as well—there’s an unspoken significance to the interaction, so apparent it’s like a third character in the room. It feels like, in that scene, two South Asian women (even in Regency-era England) are finally beginning to confront all the barriers that exist between them and their abilities to choose themselves: The cultural pressures, the passive stereotypes, and all the ways they internalized both. Because thanks to those factors, South Asian women don’t always have the luxury of redefining or pursuing their own paths to happiness…at least not without struggling under the tremendous weight of expectations placed on us.Despite that, they’re doing it—at least on TV right now. Earlier this year, we watched Deepti Vempati, a Love Is Blind cast member of Indian descent, leave her fiancé, a man who repeatedly expresses that he’s not attracted to her, at the altar. “I’m choosing myself,” Vempati declar...

The Unexpected Hero Of Stranger Things 4? Kate Bush.

Hình ảnh
Stranger Things binge is an instant trip back to the ‘80s, thanks to the accurate retro outfits, hair styles, set design, and cultural references. (Will we ever think of The NeverEnding Story the same way again?) But the music, of course, plays a huge part in nailing that effect, from the synthy theme song by Kyle Dixon and Michael Stein, down to the impeccable Journey soundtrack in the official season 4 trailer. In Stranger Things 4, music plays an important role in the battle against a new evil from the Upside Down. Named Vecna, this villain preys on people who have suffered some sort of trauma; he infiltrates their minds, haunts and entrances them, then brutally kills them. There seems to be no escape for his targets at first, but our favorite Hawkins teens discover that music therapy can surprisingly help: Playing a song the victim loves can wake them and break them free from Vecna’s trance before he can destroy them.Their theory proves to be true when Max is targeted by Vecna...

GREAT OUTFITS IN FASHION HISTORY: VENUS AND SERENA IN MATCHING PINK TEEN CHOICE AWARDS LOOKS

Hình ảnh
There are perfectly good celebrity style moments, and then there are the looks that really stick with you, the ones you try desperately to recreate at home. In 'Great Outfits in Fashion History,' Fashionista editors are revisiting their all-time favorite lewks. Over the years, Venus and Serena Williams have given fans a lot of fashion inspiration, both on and off the court. They've built longstanding relationships with the world's leading luxury houses and are regulars in the front rows of fashion weeks, and have even founded their own fashion brands (EleVen by Venus Williams and S by Serena, respectively). They each have their own aesthetics and preferences, and they've always let those shine through — even when they decide to coordinate for the red carpet. A particularly excellent match-your-sibling moment happened at the 2000 Teen Choice Awards, when the two took home surfboards in the "Choice Female Athletes" category. Venus went with a strapless, seq...

ONE OF VIRGIL ABLOH'S FINAL MAJOR PROJECTS WITH LOUIS VUITTON GETS AN EXHIBITION

Hình ảnh
When Virgil Abloh tragically passed in November 2021, he left behind a legacy as one of fashion's most prolific creators. A beloved member of the community, there was little Abloh didn't try to achieve with his time on Earth, all with the goal of setting up the possibility of even greater success for the generations which would succeed him and changing the parameters of what was possible in the world of design. His presence was irreplaceable. Louis Vuitton is proving that by paying tribute to what would ultimately become one of Abloh's final projects for the French house: His reimagining of Nike's Air Force 1 sneaker in 47 different styles, meant to accompany the Spring 2022 collection which would be his last for the brand, will be on display for the public at a special exhibition in Brooklyn. The immersive exhibition welcomes visitors inside Abloh's world. At the front is a giant screen displaying video of the ...

THE FASHION IN 'DOWNTON ABBEY: A NEW ERA' GOES TO THE SOUTH OF FRANCE AND A PERIOD FILM SET

Hình ảnh
For its sophomore outing on the big-screen, "Downton Abbey" outdoes itself, the upstairs and downstairs families going on not one, but two glamorous adventures set in 1928. An bevy of Crawleys — including Lady Edith (Laura Carmichael) and her mother Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) — head to the south of France to settle real estate matters and uncover a romantic mystery behind Dowager Countess (Maggie Smith) inheriting a villa from a late French nobleman. (Granny!) Meanwhile, Lady Mary (Michelle Dockery) holds the fort at home, as a movie production takes over the estate, also setting the stage for the most self-aware "Downton Abbey" installment ever. (The franchise famously films in Hampshire's storied Highclere Castle, thereby also helping the Carnavon family fix the leaky roof, as detailed in the PBS documentary. So meta!) Naturally, two costume designers were needed to help bring "Downton Abbey" roaring toward the '30s, in story and in style. Edith ...
